Story Starters
Getting Your Story Together
Remind the students that the story needs a beginning, middle, and end. There needs to be a problem for the characters to solve (plot). How will they solve the problem? Who will they meet along the way? What obstacles will they encounter?
When the students have created 1 or 2 pop-up pages, I have them begin thinking about their story. What else do they need for the story? Do they need buildings, furniture, talking characters, etc.? They might use one of the story starters listed below to get them started:
1. Tom woke up in the middle of the night. He hear a loud crash...
2. The storm was getting worse. Lightning flashed! Thunder shook the house. The lights went out. Suddenly....
3. One day I invented a robot. I plan to use it for many things. First....
4. Bill and Sue were lost in the jungle. They heard a strange noise.
5. One day it rained candy.
6. I never dreamed that the secret door in my basement would lead to....
7. When I looked out my window this morning, everything was blue.
8. I've had so much fun since I found out how to make myself invisible.
9. A strange thing happened to me last night. There was a loud pounding on my door. I opened it and...
10. I hear a weird noise coming from outside my tent. I slowly peeked out and .....
11. I swallowed the magic tablet. All at once my body began to grow bigger and bigger, until.....
